Growing from Seed

September 17 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Event Navigation

Join Karen and Altona Community Garden Group to learn all about growing from seed.

Why grow plants from seed?

It’s rewarding! You get what you want, it’s inexpensive, you can plant unusual varieties, and the plant is likely to be sturdier and adapt more easily to your garden. It is SO exciting to see tiny seedlings emerge from the soil mix and it’s a wonderful feeling to say you started a plant in your garden from seed!

In the workshop you will learn why and how to preserve seeds and different methods for successfuly growing seedlings. Karen Sutherland has over 25 years of experience in edible gardening and a wealth of knowledge.

After the workshop there will be a trading table and we will also have a pot luck afternoon tea so please bring a plate. We welcome participants to bring seeds/seedlings to show and share to encourage an exchange of local knowledge.

Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.

There will be herbal teas and you can enjoy chatting around the Louis Joel Nourish gardens wicking beds which are full of produce.

This will be followed by the Atona Community Gardens AGM at 5pm. We welcome everyone and look forward to seeing you there.

This event is generously funded by Hobsons Bay Council Environment Grants Program.

This event is Free but please Register to join.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS WITH KAREN SUTHERLAND:

“Both workshops were great, and so lovely of you to share the collective gardening wisdom, and to uphold the value of being a keen observer in the garden” – class participant

Workshops and classes are usually held on Saturdays and Sundays, either 10am-12 midday or 1.00-3.00pm, and run for 2 hours, including refreshments.

Attendees receive course notes, refreshments from the garden and a packet of seeds saved from Karen’s garden.

Workshops are usually held at Karen’s garden in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. Karen’s garden has around 200 edible and useful plants in an ornamental setting. Classes are held in a room overlooking the garden. To understand various plants we simply wander outside and see, smell and taste them.

Classes can also be held in your garden- Karen comes to your garden (at your office, school or council) and holds the class or workshop there. For workshops interstate, Karen is available for teaching in each of these cities by arrangement.

Bookings are not confirmed until payment received. Make a booking for classes as described below by clicking here.

Please Note: In the event there are cancellations or insufficient attendance, Edible Eden reserves the right to cancel the class or workshop and refund your monies.
