The Swiss grow a huge percentage of the wood they use for building, furniture making and heating. My brother-in-law, Ruedi, is a typical Swiss person and grows all his wood for heating in a small part of the forest the family owns Judy outside their village. Ruedi hates waste and loves exercise so when the power company whose line travels over his tall old Hazelnut plants asked that he cut them back, he chose to do so gradually and uses every part. Every few days he cuts some branches down to ground level and feeds the upper branches to his goats, who go crazy for the foliage when they see him coming. He cuts the stripped branches up for kindling and keeps these thicker lower branches in a pile until he has time to cut them into lengths for the wood heater.
